PaxVax is seeking to gain a licence from the Australian Government to conduct a clinical trial of a GM live bacterial vaccine against cholera.

The Australian Government Department of Health, specifically the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator, has received an application for a licence from PaxVax Australia Pty Ltd to conduct an intentional release of a genetically modified cholera vaccine. The Gene Technology Regulator, Dr Joe Smith, has received the application and has stated that comments from the public are not sought after at this time. Only in accordance with the Gene Technology Act 2000 will the public have a minimum of 30 days to comment but not until around late January 2014.
The trial is to take place in several “sites” in local government areas in Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia & Victoria though it’s not specified where exactly. According to PaxVax additional trials will also be conducted at sites in Canada and the U.S. to confirm vaccine safety in a larger population & measure immunogenicity.
Here we have a large multinational pharmaceutical corporation who wants to use Australian citizens as guinea pigs for a genetically modified cholera bacterial vaccine. Sounds delightful. Especially considering the prevalence of cholera in this country. Not!
Cholera has a habit of occurring in third world countries after natural disasters have devastated them causing fresh water, and sanitation services to go offline.
“Cholera continues to infect areas around the world that suffer from poor sanitation, poverty, and poor access to safe drinking water, particularly parts of the world like Haiti and South Asia that are recovering from recent natural disasters,” said Mitch Cohen, M.D., Professor and Vice Chair of Pediatrics for Clinical Affairs at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
So why not invest in providing these countries with those very things they need? Why not spend money on infrastructure to improve sanitation, water purifying technology and overall public welfare to reduce the disparity between the wealthy and poor? Wouldn’t that be more logical?
Logical yes. Profitable no. There is money to be made from keeping people living in these conditions.
But what of the risks involved in this proposed environmental release of this genetically modified bacteria in Australia? Control measures are set to be in place for the trial by PaxVax but what if they fail? At a minimum wildlife and ecosystems will become infected and a possible pandemic being the worst case scenario.
Recently the United Nations has come under fire and are being sued for gross negligence for bringing Cholera to Haiti in the worlds worst outbreak of the bacteria. However the the U.N, guilty or not claims to have immunity against law suits since it’s inception.
The bacteria was responsible for killing more than 8,300 Haitians and leaving approximately 650,000 alive after suffering through the infection. Is this what we have to look forward to in Australia should the bacteria escape it’s controlled environment in our own backyard?

There is a link to the list of sites in Australia approved for GM trials. However these are for agriculture crops. Not vaccine trials. The list of agriculture GM crop sites is also troubling to say the least!
Just to be clear, as there has been much fear mongering and irrational speculation over this GM vaccine trial, this is not a aerosol vaccine to be sprayed on the public. This vaccine trial will be administered orally to 1000 volunteer test subjects.

My family are writing to our state MP and local newspapers to oppose this outrage and to find out where in our home state this is to be trialled. Your article provides very useful information to inform people of the dangers of Cholera. If they test Cholera today what will they test on us tomorrow?

Have you read the license summary for this? The trial is innoculation via ORAL INTESTION of 1000 subjects. Nowhere does it say it will be dumped in the waterway or sprayed as is being suggested by many sources.
I actually hate vaccinations and GM – but the misinformation being spread about this is intriguing.

So can someone explain how they are making this a trial? If they are giving this vaccine to 1000 people, how do they know its works if these people do not have cholera to start with?

The possible implications of this trial are frightening, especially as cholera is virtually non-existent in Australia at present. Who knows what will result from opening this ‘Pandora’s Box’? If they start a cholera epidemic they’ll certainly sell a lot of vaccines! And will they be prosecuted if they do start such an epidemic? I very much doubt it.
Read the above. There is no spraying involved. Not live cholera (as advertised anyway) and no sprayed vaccine.
The test is an oral vaccine. I wonder who would be stupid enough to take it though?
Yes, I am aware it’s an oral vaccine. But there is quite a lot of evidence that vaccines can cause disease, and that a vaccinated person can pass on the disease the vaccine was supposed to prevent. It has happened with the whooping cough and polio vaccines, for example.
The sheer amount of stupidity contained in this and other comments… it burns…
A) vaccines do not cause diseases. B) this is a trial for a vaccine which has already been used in the past (just being picked up now by a new manufacturer, thus a new trial). C) the trial will be conducted among volunteers.
Vaccines HAVE been implicated in causing diseases, including whooping cough, measles and polio. For example, look up: Acellular pertussis vaccination enhances B. parapertussis colonization. Here is an excerpt: “Despite this vaccine being hugely effective against B. pertussis, which was once the primary childhood killer, these data suggest that the vaccine may be contributing to the observed rise in whooping cough incidence over the last decade by promoting B. parapertussis infection.” Other studies that show vaccines can cause disease are easily found on the internet, as are websites run by doctors who are against vaccination because of this and other dangers.
Where have you been burying hour head? Where do you get your research information that vaccines don’t cause diseases? I suspect from the drug company propaganda !!!!!
For all those who don’t believe the damage that vaccines cause I ask this.
1) If 100 are vaccinated and 1000 are not why on earth would the vaccinated ones be concerned about being in the midst of those who are not?
2) If the vaccination is voluntary-that is by choice, where lies the equity for those who choose not to have such a vaccine released in thier environment?
3)Is Ignorance bliss?
4)Is ignorance of the ‘Law’ (capital. L.) an acceptable excuse for stupidity?

1) the definition of ‘proposed’ and (are there any guarantees the proposals will suffice?)
2) the definition of ‘a number’ and (how many proposals?)
3) the definition of ‘control measures’ and (what they would be?)
4) the definition of ‘restrict the spread’ and (how to restrict and if restriction is not sufficient how to stop the spread?)
5) the definition of ‘persistence of”. and (if it could be stopped how and why would it persist?)
6) the definition of ‘its introduced genetic material’ and (how to un-introduce an introduced genetic material?)
Taking into account these unanswered questions who is willing to give a guarantee no adverse impacts will be incurred on people and environment involved directly, indirectly or generally in future caused by introducing this GM Cholera vaccine?
