“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” – Martin Luther King
By Michelle Maher.
On Tuesday 30th November, a group of local Redlands residents and business owners came together to create a free choice, apolitical group called “One Redlands – We Stand Together”, in response to the Queensland’s State government’s jab mandates, and the implications these have on the local community. They all agreed it was unworkable for the Redlands businesses to discriminate against those who have chosen not to take a medical procedure which, according to the Australian Immunisation Handbook, “must be given voluntarily in the absence of undue pressure, coercion or manipulation.” They wanted to give a voice to those in the community who are feeling unheard by their local and state politicians.
Within three days, on Friday 3rd December, the One Redlands committee had organised an event with One Nation Senator Malcolm Roberts, which was attended by close to six hundred concerned residents, many of whom had businesses which have been negatively affected by the State government’s Covid directives over the previous two years. To add insult to injury, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk 17th December proposal of further discrimination against the “unjabbed” will put further pressure on these already struggling local businesses. Hundreds signed a petition which reads: “We, the undersigned, request that Council Informs the Queensland State Government that: We the people do not support the Queensland State Government’s mandates of compulsory vaccination and the discrimination it represents. My body, my freedom of choice”. This will be presented to Redlands Council on Tuesday 7thDecember.
The primary takeaways the One Redlands team took from their first community meeting were the need to build a strong local community which will all support each other, and the concerns that thousands of local Redlands residents have around the vaccine mandates.
The group has many plans for the future, beginning with a second meeting with an incredible line up of solution focussed speakers. Judging from the large uptake within a day of the ticket release, this event will be very well attended, so please book as soon as possible.
This event will be hosted in the Redlands and is open to all the LGAs.
